Mine Closure

Closure activities included the safe rehabilitation of the existing Tailings Storage Facility involving the re-profiling the downstream embankment to a flatter slope and incorporating rock armouring to provide buttressing and erosion protection to the facility. The embankment was raised to provide a wet closure solution which required modifications to the primary spillway and the introduction of a secondary (emergency) spillway. An array of monitoring instruments were introduced to the facility including piezometers, inclinometers, extensometers and InSAR monitoring.

The closure works involved alluvial gold sterilisation works that introduced concurrent mining and civil earthworks activities thereby minimising cost. The site for closure works were sterilised whilst utilising suitable overburden materials to construct closure landforms including large scale settlement ponds, river protection bunds, pit wave protection bunds, rocklined channels and wetlands. Particular aspects of the wetlands included large scale culvert structures, weir boards, waste dump landform stabilisation and

Supporting infrastructure included Alluvial Plant facilities such as a gold room, offices and security rooms.

During the course of the closure works the operations infrastructure including the process plant and accommodation and administration facilities were dismantled, packed and either sold or repurposed as closure infrastructure. This included the completion of closure accommodation facilities, offices and warehouse facilities.

South 32 GEMCO TSF 567 Closure

Pre-Feasibility Study focusing on the closure of the original tailings storage facility complex. A number of options for closure were considered and the adopted design considered unique closure solutions such as incorporating sand tailings within the design, resulting in reduced capital costs not only associated with the 567 dam’s complex, but also set a benchmark for future dam closures resulting in a reduced requirement for future sand tailings storage facilities.

Nolans Project

The project included the update of all non-process infrastructure estimates (and designs where applicable) prior to execution. Facilities include site access roads, accommodation village, transportable and steel framed structures (associated with offices, change rooms, warehousing and workshops), borefield, major bulk earthworks pads for process and mining infrastructure, vehicle wash-down, refuelling systems, water and waste water treatment package, surface water structures and residue storage facility.

The project was split into early and final packages to allow key infrastructure such as accommodation and construction water to be brought on prior to full construction commencing. The early works packages also include engagement of specialist consultants and vendors including traffic design, survey and geotechnical investing/testing activities to provide data to finalise key designs required at project startup.
